Fresh Foods
Remember all fresh foods should be well rinsed. They can be fed chopped, sliced, wedges, grated, raw, steamed. You can make large batches and freeze them in ziploc bags or airtight containers and thaw out as needed.
Veggies
I give the bird veggies about 4x a week. Too much can cause runny droppings. All birds should get some form of vegetation. Veggies can be chopped, sliced, grated and can be fed raw or steamed. Make sure they are well rinsed. You can sprinkle powder supplemts on them after they are freshly rinsed, the water will make them stick and are a good way of making sure the birds eat their vitamins! Discard any veggies not eaten within about 4 hours., less time if weather is hot. Wilted veggies should never be fed. You can mix in frozen veggies (that have been steamed), though fresh is always best.
Kale
Cilantro Parsley Corn (steamed) Tomato Romaine Lettuce Sweet Potato (baked/steamed) Peas Bell Peppers |
Spinach
Cucumber Carrot Broccoli Dandelion Greens Sprouts Chickweed Zucchini (baked steamed) Pumpkin |
These are the veggies I mainly feed. Though there are many other vegetables that can be given to your little feathered companions.
Fruits
I feed fruits very sparingly. Fruit naturally contains sugars and budgies are small birds, high amounts of starches and sugars can be bad for them. While naturally most birds know how much they need to eat, some (like some people) can become “addicted” to sweets and over indulge on certain foods. Too much of anything can be bad and unless your birds are individually housed you cannot control how much one bird consumes. I feed chopped or grated fruits only about once every two weeks, mixed in with vegetables.
